I originally wasn’t going to write this post and instead just slot it into ‘hello July’ but after the night finished I just knew I had to devote a whole post to it. If you read my blog frequently you will know that my birthday was last week (26th June) and to celebrate I had a party with my friends a couple of days before. There were so many photos and so many memories/moments to talk about I just couldn’t choose what to write, so I decided to dedicate a whole post to everything party related. After all it was a very special evening and I wanted to document as much as I could.
I chose that I wanted to have a garden party, as the weather around my birthday is usually nice and I am fortunate enough to have plenty of garden space to host an outside party! Last year my family bought a marquee to put up for events like this, and it was ideal to store food/drinks etc and also for some shelter in case it rained. I was conscious of the weather when organising, but I was so lucky with the forecast and it turned out to be a beautiful warm evening, with absolutely no rain in sight. I couldn’t have been luckier if I tried!
We aren’t the biggest ‘party’ group, and we certainly aren’t the type of people to go out partying most weekends so I actually think it makes it nicer when everyone can get together. And it makes it even nicer when that time is my birthday! I had a guest list of around 20, so it was large enough to be a party but not too large that the night became out of control. I thought the number was perfect as it was a large group but I could still talk to everyone there and it wasn’t complete chaos. Plus they are all my closest friends which just made the night so much better as I was surrounded with my favourite people .
My best friend Isy slept the night before the party, so she could help me set up the next morning. I don’t do things by halves, so we had a lot of decorations and there is no way I could have done it by myself. She helped me with everything and didn’t complain once even though she has injured herself recently. Seriously I don’t know what I do to deserve that girl in my life! We spent the whole morning setting up, blowing up balloons, getting ready and lots and lots of dancing. A perfect start to a perfect day really 💜
We had plenty of time to set up, with the first group of people arriving mid afternoon. This was the first party that I have hosted where I haven’t been running around setting up at the last minute before everyone arrived, so it felt really relaxed from the beginning and enjoyed every minute. It was so nice to have a smaller group for the first few hours to start the party before everyone got here and the chaos begun!
Maybe the most exciting thing to happen (I know im pathetic) is having my own snapchat filter for my birthday party. It was so amazing to have a personalised one for the location of the marquee, it even had my name on! Honestly it made me so happy as all of my friends love using Snapchat and seeing the filter on all the stories was such a cool experience! I would definitely get it again if I had the opportunity, as it really made the evening seem more ‘professional’ (if that makes any sense whatsoever).
I know a lot of people who read my blog are beauty/fashion addicts like me so I thought to give an overview of how I looked. My outfit was a last minute decision, and I went with a black wraparound skirt from pretty little thing and a grey top from topshop. I originally was wearing tights but it got too warm so an hour or so into the party I took them off and decided to just have bare legs, which I actually really liked! It’s very rare I show my legs so it made a nice change, and I really liked the outfit overall. The skirt would look amazing with heels but because I was outside and on grass for the majority of the evening it would have been so impractical so I opted for sandals instead.
I am the least adventurous person with my hair, so I just had loose curls which I really like and is my classic going out hairstyle. To finish my hair off I wore a tiara, that I bought from Claire’s. My friends were joking about me wearing one so I decided to make that a reality and buy one, and I am actually so glad I did. I think it looked really pretty and something a bit different, even if it did start off as a bit of a joke. My makeup was a deep smokey eye with large lashes and a nude lipstick, however it is identical to a separate video I made recently all about my birthday makeup and a breakdown of the products that I used. Now onto the decor. This is potentially my favourite aspect of organising a party because you can make everything look so pretty and really create an atmosphere with just a few decorations. I think it stems from me being a complete Instagram addict, so wanting every tiny detail to be photo worthy… and I am certain that we achieved that! I chose a tropical theme, as my party was the end of June so it is the start of the summer season. I figured that regardless of the weather, bold colours would brighten up the mood and really get everyone into a summer spirit. Everywhere you looked there were hot pinks (which is my favourite colour) alongside bright blues, greens, oranges and yellows. I particularly liked my bunting, as it was placed all over the marquee and was all of the theme colours… so pretty!
A firm favourite and certainly a crowd pleaser is Felicity the flamingo. She is a giant inflatable flamingo that is usually used in the pool on holiday, but for the sake of the party she turned into an ice bucket for all of our drinks. It was such a funny touch and an opportunity that couldn’t be missed considering how well it fit with the theme. It’s a very ‘me’ thing to do and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
Balloons have to be my favourite party decoration, and we definitely bought enough of them for the party. Last year I had silver number balloons and I loved them, so I bought some more this year because they just looked so pretty…. and made an amazing photo opportunity! We also blew up a lot of confetti style balloons, which looked pretty in the short term however the helium wasn’t the best quality and the majority deflated by halfway through the party, which was a shame. They looked good whilst they lasted though!
The actual evening was incredible, and I spent the majority of the night dancing and singing along to my favourite songs…. how else would I want to spend my birthday? So much fun! The marquee also makes an amazing dancefloor, if I do say so myself. Something that I love about my friends is how diverse our music taste is, so one minute we had one genre and the next it was a completely different artist in a completely different time period. The whole playlist was an eclectic mix but so much fun to not just stick to one style and there was certainly something to suit everyone.
So many memories were made and there was so much laughter throughout the night, and I couldn’t have loved it anymore… the perfect night completely. Its an evening I will remember for a long time, it truly was the best day of my year so far and actually one of the best days of my life. I am so lucky to have such an amazing group of people around me to celebrate with and make my birthday so special and I love every single one of them ❤
