I have been following Molly online for a long time (since around 2015) and she was one of the original inspirations for starting my social medias. I love that she is in the same year as me, as it showed me that you can be a social influencer at a young age… before Molly and her friendship group came along I found that it was mainly adults dominating the youtube industry who I couldn’t really relate to. She posts videos a few times a week, and I particularly like her vlogs as they are so easy to watch and are often based in my local area. It made me so excited when Molly wanted to feature on this series, and this is potentially the most exciting ‘a chat with’ yet!For the interview, my text will be in bold and Molly’s answers will be in a regular font.
I want to start these questions by saying thank you so much for featuring on my blog! I absolutely love your YouTube and social media, and I am honoured that you are part of this series.
Thank you for asking me to be part of it!
Why did you start your social media and YouTube originally? Was it planned or a spontaneous decision one day?
It was kind of a bit of both, myself and my friends were bored between the Summer of Year 8 and Year 9 and had been watching a lot of American YouTube so thought we’d give it a go ourselves! It just started out as a laugh but we took it pretty seriously and were all very dedicated! That was when I got a real love for it!
You have recently launched merchandise which was so exciting! How did this come about and how long did the creative process take?
Eeeek thank you so much! It’s still so crazy hearing that outloud (or seeing it written down, same thing.) It’d been in the planning process since about May/June time, although I’d had the designs prepared for about a year! It’s something I’d done in the past just for fun as a laugh! It was really exciting seeing it all go through and actually come to life!
What has been the most surreal moment of your YouTube experience so far?
That is such a difficult question because every part of it feels surreal! Every event I go to I have to pinch myself because it’s so crazy that I’d even get an invite! Probably the craziest one was attending the Cosmopolitan Vlogger Awards at Kensington Palace, even writing that is INSANE literally WHAT?
A lot of my blog is relating around sixth form and study content, and as we are in the same year I have a few questions about your college experience. Do you enjoy sixth form? What advice would you give to someone who has recently moved into year 12?
Sixth Form has been a rollercoaster, I love my group of friends – they’ve been incredible since day 1 and I’ve made so many memories that I know I’ll keep forever. However there have also been moments that have made me super excited to leave, not everybody is as supportive as my friends and my boyfriend have been, which is completely understandable.
What are your top tips to manage your time effectively? I find it hard to keep up to date with a blog and schoolwork, so I can’t imagine how difficult it could get for you with such a large platform!
Honestly it’s so difficult (As you probably gathered by how long it took me to get back to you to send this over – I’m so sorry about that again) I rely on late nights and coffee but I wouldn’t advise that to everyone! It comes down to time management and making sure you know how much you need to get done that day (something I do find difficult to keep on top of I’ll admit)
As we are both the same age, we are starting to think about future plans. I know you have been very open about your insecurity surrounding university and that you aren’t sure whether to go or not, how have you coped with this? I always feel like there is so much pressure from college to go to university.
I do find this a very difficult topic, it’s so common in school for everyone to be sat chatting about which Uni they’ve recently visited or where they’re applying to, I tend to just keep quiet and go a bit awkward when people direct the question at me because I really don’t know what I want to do. I’m hoping I kind of just work it out as I’m going along (that’s what I’ve done with YouTube and that hasn’t gone that badly) but only time will tell. We’ll see where we’re at this time next year I guess.
How have you dealt with growth online in relation to school? Do you find that people act differently around you because of your job and how did your teachers react?
I definitely find this, I found myself surrounded by a lot of new people at the beginning of last year when I started sixth form, people that only knew me as ‘Beauty Spectrum’ and hadn’t known me before that. Naturally, not everyone was particularly nice about it and that’s okay, the way I see it is if they want to judge me based on what they think that they know from my social media that’s up to them. Teachers is a tricky one, they know what’s going on and most of them are really supportive, a lot of them don’t really understand it when I sat ‘I upload videos to YouTube’ and then continue to explain that it means I’ll be missing school a bit. They tend to just smile and nod.
Does Tom mind you having your relationship online? Obviously the vast majority is private but does he like being in the vlogs etc? I bet it would be so nice to look back on memories with your partner in a few years time, all captured on video!
No he doesn’t mind at all! At the beginning he found it a bit awkward, but only because it was something knew – sticking a camera in someone’s face isn’t an everyday occurrence after all! Obviously the majority of our relationship remains offline so it doesn’t really interfere! Tom’s quite into the media/graphics side of it all too so he likes to help out!
What has been your favourite day of 2017 so far? I ask this question to everyone as I am always nosey!
SUCH a difficult question as there have been loads of good days! Any day I spend in London is naturally one of my favourites. Also my trip to Edinburgh with Tom was one of the happiest times. The weekend I spent at Radio One’s Big Weekend probably holds title for my favourite though, so May 28th!
As I write a lot about beauty on my blog, we will have the last question as something makeup related. What is your absolute holy grail makeup product?
Oooh nice one to end on! Probably the Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara or the Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer, because I feel like you can change your whole face with just these two products! (I can’t pick just one)
So that is the interview! I just want to take this time to thank Molly for featuring on this series, I really appreciate when other social influencers come together to support the smaller bloggers!
