Jade (or @unjadedjade as you may know her) has been one of my biggest inspirations since I first discovered her around easter this year. I absolutely adore her and if ever I’m feeling unmotivated her videos are what I turn to to get a productive mindset back. I love how she is my age, and manages both @unjadedjade whilst also being an academic and working incredibly hard on studying. Her rapid growth online is proof of just how incredible she is, so I was honoured when I had the opportunity to interview her.
First of all I want to start by saying thank you so much for featuring on my blog, I really appreciate it!
No you’re honestly more than welcome! I’m honoured that you want to talk to me 😉
Why did you start @unjadedjade originally? Was it planned or a spontaneous decision one day?
Quite honestly, it was something I’d been distantly interested in doing for a very long time; it just never really materialised. I could not afford a camera, and also had little idea of exactly what kind of videos I wanted to make. I then made it a bit of a mission to save up for a camera, and after paying half as a Christmas gift, I got my Canon 750D! I spent 4 months planning my channel content and learning how to edit videos, thumbnails and basically become a YouTuber haha. In many ways I never predicted that it would flourish into what it is today, but I always knew that I wanted to help, motivate and inspire people my age. That was the goal.
How have you dealt with rapid growth? Did you find it hard to deal with?
It was absolute madness! I really am just Jade, not some crazy big YouTuber. There’s no guidebook on ‘fame’ or rapid growth, and it was therefore a little overwhelming at the start. My phone would explode with notifications; I’d suddenly have not 10, but 100+ comments to reply to, and I realised that my little videos were suddenly reaching not just friends and family, but so many UK teenagers! It was the most amazing feeling, yet also came with an unspoken pressure to deliver. I wanted (and still do!) to give the best advice possible.
What has been the most surreal experience of your @unjadedjade youtube career so far?
Always being spotted. I still can’t really comprehend it. Memorable moments have been when I went to the airport with my family at 6am and was spotted in Pret. I then went to Thailand, and the girl in the villa nextdoor knew who I was too! Crazy. You never ever get used to that.
Yes, they were both such amazing and memorable experiences. The people I’ve been fortunate enough to meet have been so positive and inspiring! It took around a month at least to plan the first one, especially as I had little clue what I was doing or even if people would come. All I knew was that I wanted to make a real event out of it, rather than just meet in a random park! I am definitely considering doing more in the future, perhaps in January.
Definitely. I intend to see as much of the world as I can in this lifetime. If money was no issue, I’d probably go straight across the world to Australia, a place I’ve dreamt of visiting since I was a child when watching ‘H20 Just Add Water’! I love the chilled vibe of the country and the diversity of wildlife.
We are both applying for university, so I completely understand the pressure that you are under right now. How did you know that the universities that you applied for are the right ones?
The university stress is omnipresent I swear! At the end of the day, it was all on instinct, something that can only be achieved through visiting the universities and connecting with the course. I really prioritised the courses I liked the look of most, and also tried hard not to focus solely on reputation but more my own feelings. For example, I was really considering Durham until I visited and it just didn’t click! I’m not sure you ever know if they’re really “right”. I do believe that whatever you end up feeling inclined to write on that UCAS form is the right decision!
What are your top tips to manage your time effectively? I find it hard to keep up to date with my blog and schoolwork so I can’t imagine difficult it is for you with such a large platform at @unjadedjade!
Oh definitely; it’s never easy to maintain it all! I’d say it’s all about prioritising and being aware of your deadlines. For example, I have a set day to post YouTube videos (Wednesday!) so work my schedule around that, including having a thumbnail done in advance. I can then evaluate when homework is due, when I have tests etc to prioritise day by day!
If you could have chosen 5 A levels at the start of year 12, what would your 5th had been?
Either Geography or French, both of which I loved at GCSE and miss. I can’t help but feel like it’d be most useful to have done French (having fluency in another language is such a skill!), although I did put Geography as my reserve and it would help me with my biology. Regardless, I don’t regret the subjects I did choose!
Thankfully I have the most amazing friend imaginable, so apart from a few more exciting conversations about experiences I’ve had thanks to the channel, the friendships themselves are just as strong. Some people who are less close react slightly differently, although I feel grounded enough to recognise it. I think I started my channel at a good time as I feel well respected at my sixth form by peers and most of the lower school, so any “hate” is manageable or non-existent. I absolutely love having younger students randomly saying hi to me in the corridors, or hearing that a teacher showed my video to help in their lesson! Crazy, but amazing. It reminds me of the impact I may be having on others.
Ah, this is impossible! I’m sat here looking out my window clutching at inspiration haha! It’s a toss up between the meet ups, the last day of Gold DofE in Norway, or this one day on holiday with my family where I meditated so much and did yoga and felt so happy and at peace. I’m blessed to say that this year has been so transformative, life changing even, and though there has been stress and low days, I would change nothing!
So thats the interview! Thank you so much to @unjadedjade for taking part and I hope you enjoyed leaning a little more about her.
