A chat with @alyssaroseart_

I have been following Alyssa since she first started her makeup account, back when she had less than 1000 followers. I have really enjoyed watching her grow and develop her makeup skills, and my goodness does she have a talent. I adore her costume makeup looks and she puts so much personality into her account, which I equally love.

As always from now on, my writing will be in bold and the answers will be in a bold font.

What made you start your Instagram page? Was it planned or a spontaneous decision one day?

Starting my instagram was deffo a spontaneous decision! I had recently gotten back into my Art at the beginning of 2017 after I had decided to quit uni and job at the time. Throughout the year and a half I was studying at uni I completely neglected by Art, but picked it up again when I started drawing more and started making an effort again with my makeup & experimenting with different looks/colours. I also wanted one place where I could feel inspired by artists/poets/writers wherever I looked. One day I just decided that I wanted a place to document all of my looks and post all my arty farty things so in May 2017 i set up @alyssaroseart_ and it’s the best decision I ever made, it’s my little pride and joy!

What is your favourite look you have ever done?

I have a couple that I think I’d have to say are my faves! I love the galaxy skull I did at Halloween and the Fireworks from November! But, one of my all time faves will be the look I created inspired by R.M.Drake who is one of my favourite writers and biggest inspirations! The look was inspired from his quote & illustration “Sad girl, I see that your eyes keep watering, that your soul keeps breaking, but please believe that there a thousand beautiful things waiting for you.” When Drake posted that quote I was going through a breakup and a really challenging time in my life and it spoke to me in a million different ways. The look I created was simple, but extremely meaningful. R.M.Drake noticed the look and a simple comment he left on it made me feel even more passionate and motivated to create!

Do you prefer the beauty side of things or the creative looks?

This is a hard one! As much as I absolutely love makeup and experimenting with different looks and giving other people makeovers; I think I’d have to say the more creative looks! I just think they’re an amazing way to express so many different things and each look can be interpreted in a completely different way for people which is one thing I love about it! There are no right or wrong answers when it comes to creating creative looks, you just let your imagination run wild! I also love coming up with looks that I’ve never seen anyone else create before and finding inspiration from the smallest of things!

I know you are open about mental health on your social media, does your art help this?

Yes, extremely! I have been diagnosed with anxiety and depression and one thing that helped me massively when I was going through a really dark time in my life were the various poets, musicians and artists! They’ve helped me massively by showing me that there is light at the end of the tunnel. As I mentioned, I set up my account in May just before World Mental Health Day and the first creative look I actually ever created was for this day in particular! I like to take my own experiences to help others. I know what it feels like to feel so low, so worthless and at complete rock bottom. I hate to think that there are people who are in the position I was once in- feeling so alone, it breaks my heart. I will always do everything I can to reinforce positivity and will do anything I can to make people smile even if it’s just the littlest things. I want people to know that my page is a place full of positivity and somewhere they can come to if they’re having a bad day or just need a need a little pick me up. I want them to know that they are not alone and that if I can help in any way, I will, however big or small.

Which beauty product is your holy grail?

This ones a hard one as I feel like I have so many haha! I don’t think I could live without my Morphe 35o palette or Kat Von D Lock It Foundation, but I’d have to say the Sleek Solstice Palette! It’s the most amazing highlight I’ve ever laid my eyes on!

What is your favourite moment to come out of your Instagram?

That’s easy! It would have to be meeting Rachel, who is now my best friend! We met last June after I put up a post asking for people to model for me so I could practice makeup on others before offering a makeup service to the public. We clicked straight away and our bond is un-breakable. She’s the same age as my big sister which is why I think we get along so well, she’s like a mini (literally, she’s tiny haha!) version of my sister who I love dearly and I’m so glad I met her!

I love that you work alongside your bestfriend for a lot of your looks. What is it like having someone so supportive of your work and working together?

It’s absolutely amazing! Rachel believed in me when I felt like no one else did and has been with me since day one. She pushes me and encourages to be the best person I can be and I’m incredibly thankful for all the amazing opportunities she’s given me. She’s taught me so much about myself, about relationships and life in general. One of my favourite memories of working with her is when we travelled to London to film the first episode of Slayed- a reality show that will soon be on Channel 4! The whole experience was amazing from doing her makeup to being behind the scenes and meeting some amazing and talented people! Rachel is truly an amazing person inside and out and is one of my biggest inspirations. She has the kindest soul and the biggest heart and I can’t thank her enough for her constant support, I try to, but there just aren’t enough words! It’s always so fun working with her, it doesn’t ever feel like ‘work’ because we’re just doing what we love and enjoying it so much! I didn’t only gain a client when meeting her, but a friend for life.

What are you most excited about in 2018?

I’m excited to see my account hopefully grow and to meet new people! I’ve connected and made friends with so many lovely people from all over the world and I can’t wait to finally meet some more of those lovely faces and create new memories. I love that people’s passions bring them together!

What should your followers expect to see from @alyssaroseart_ in the near future?

I have some really exciting looks and things planned for the year that I can’t wait for people to see! My passion for art is always the first thing on my mind on a morning and the last thing I think about before I sleep. I’m always jotting ideas down and I can’t wait to share those with people and continue to show how dedicated I am to this! I feel the most motivated I have ever felt and I really do appreciate every single person who continues to support me and my work; it really does mean the world to me!💖

Finally, what piece advice would you give someone starting up a makeup account?

Always be yourself! Don’t let people’s snide remarks or ignorance get you down and keep doing what you love even if people don’t believe in you at first, believe in yourself and do what makes YOU happy; always! Life is too short to live to please others, live for yourself🤗

Firstly I want to say thank you so much for featuring in this series, I love your account!

So there is the interview! I hope you love Alyssa as much as I do and if so please follow her on the links below. Is there any other makeup artists that you would like to see featured?
