I haven’t actually been following Kirsty for that long, and we first met at blog at the beach back in January. Since then her blog and Instagram has grown so much and for good reason. As a plus sized travel blogger, she has been jetsetting a lot recently and it’s so nice to see her travel posts… it inspires me to up my game with travel and location reviews!
As always, my text will be in bold and Kirsty’s will be in regular font.
What made you start your blog? Was it planned or more of a spontaneous decision?
I actually wanted to start a blog when I moved to University 7 years ago, with the plan to blog about my experience there. I ended up chickening out, but wish I had because I feel like I wold have been so much further ahead by now. When I finally started my blog I was just about to graduate and I wrote about Marketing as a ‘kind of’ portfolio for jobs I was applying for. I soon got bored of essay style posts, so I stopped writing for a few months.
After a short break (and following a tonne of bloggers) I decided to start a beauty blog! I loved makeup and I could talk about it FOR HOURS so I thought, why not? I had a beauty blog (Just a Little Bit Ginger) for about a year and a half before making the move over to Lifestyle. Obviously Lifestyle covered a wide range of topics but I got to the point where my heart wasn’t in it unless I was writing about Travel. I decided to make the move over to Travel blogger and honestly, haven’t looked back since.
Are you enjoying freelancing? Was it a hard decision to make the move to your new career path?
Oh my gosh, I am enjoying it so much! I don’t think I could imagine my life any other way now.
I have known for as long as I can remember that I have one day wanted to work for myself. I dreamt of going on the Apprentice, made a million and one different business plans and made damn sure it would happen one day. When things started going well with my blog and my side business I thought it’s now or never. It was definitely a hard decision as I was so scared about not having a secure income, but it was also part of the excitement too!
It was amazing seeing your speech at blog at the beach earlier in the year, were you nervous? I couldn’t have stood up in front of that many people with cameras!
Thank you – I was so so so so nervous. I don’t know if anyone saw me standing in the sidelines beforehand but I very quickly drank my glass of prosecco, which definitely helped. After 2 or 3 minutes of standing up there and talking my nerves were pretty much non-existent and I found it so fun. People ACTUALLY wanted to listen to me and I could see they wanted to hear what I had to say. I felt very proud of myself by the end of it.
We recently spoke about the rise (and fall) of Instagram and the very slow rise in followers for smaller bloggers! Do you think it is harder growing your platform now than what it would have been a few years ago?
I think a lot of people think that it’s too late to grow your Instagram now that there are so many well established bloggers on there, but I think that might not necessarily be true. I think although there are a lot more things getting in the way of your following growing now, there are A LOT more people using Instagram, so ultimately it balances itself out again.
What do you look for in a ‘perfect’ Instagram page?
I hate to say it but I am one of those people that LOVE a theme. I really like how much hard work goes into the composition and editing to stick to a theme, so usually think they deserve a follow. I also love accounts with personality and ones I can relate to, which includes a lot of chatty captions, photos of happy people and travel photos. Basically my own account, can I follow me?!
Also, cheeky plug but you can follow me here.
Obviously you are mainly a travel blogger so have visited a fair amount of places! Which is your favourite place that you have ever been?
I love this question. There are actually two places that I don’t think I will ever be able to choose between.
The first place is Wroclaw in Poland. I first went last April and since then I have been back three times as I love it so much. I don’t think I can quite put into words exactly what it is I love about Wroclaw, but I know it’s somewhere I won’t stop going back to.
The second place is Southern California. This particular place holds a special place in my heart as when I was 19 I moved there for four months to work during summer. It was one of the most incredible experiences I have EVER done and I 100% believe I left my heart there. One day, I’ll go back.
What are your travel plans for the rest of the year?
I have Bali in 13 days, it’s gone so fast! We’re spending 10 days exploring Ubud, Kuta, Seminyak and Gili Islands and I am SO EXCITED. I think it is going to be one of my best trips yet. After that I will be taking a couple of months break (unless a press trip comes up!) as I need to save money for a house move in July. I’m gutted I am going to be having a month off, but hoping to make up for it and go on plenty of trips towards the end of the year.
What has been your favourite day of 2018 so far? I bet you are excited about Bali!
I haven’t been to Bali yet, but I am sure it will definitely be my favourite thing I’ve done so far this year!
This is such a hard question, I can’t seem to pin point what I have done so far this year now. I think if I was going to pick anything, it would probably be one of the days I was back in Poland at the start of the year – it’s my happy place!
What can we expect to see from Kirstyleanne.com in the future?
LOTS OF BALI CONTENT. I have so much planned following my trip, which should be fun! I am also starting to do a lot more plus size travel related content. I think this is a topic that not a lot of people cover and after writing my Travelling While Plus Size post, I had a lot of people reach out to me and say thank you for bringing this to light. I’m hoping it’s something I can cover a lot over the next year or so.
As I talk a lot about beauty on my blog I will have the last question as something beauty related, what is your holy grail product?
Oh gosh, that’s a hard question! I think I’d have to say at the moment it’s my Too Faced Sweet Peach palette. I use it pretty much every day as it’s so versatile.
So that’s the post! I hope that you really liked seeing Kirsty’s answers and if you want to see more of her, then please go over and take a look at her blog by clicking below.
