I first discovered Charlotte’s from @bycharlotteann at the start of this year when I was invited to blog at the beach, which is a large blog event hosted in Leeds. Her blog was mentioned and I loved (and remembered) the name so vividly that I followed her as soon as I got home… and since then I have been hooked on her content. I love her lifestyle posts and her chatty writing style paired with gorgeous photography is the winning combination that makes her blog one of my absolute faves. It was these reasons that I have wanted to feature her on ‘a chat with’ for a while, so it makes me so happy that she is finally making her debut over here today.
As always, from now on my text will be in bold and Charlottes will be in a regular font.
What made you start @bycharlotteann? Was it planned or more of a spontaneous decision one day?
It was a bit of a natural progression, really. I had always loved being online and making websites, so when some of the fashion bloggers I followed on Tumblr started making their own blogs elsewhere I decided to give it a try for myself! I had always been interested in fashion and wanted to study it at university, so I thought having a blog would help me with my applications.
What made you decide your original name ‘colours and carousels’ (since rebranded to @bycharlotteann), I absolutely love it!
So, when I started my blog, I had just turned 15 and having song lyrics in your name on MSN was all the rage. I’d recently discovered Ellie Goulding and was obsessed with her song Starry Eyed- there’s a line in the song that goes ‘so we burst into colours and carousels’, and I liked the alliteration so I decided to use it!
What is your favourite blog post that you have ever written?
Thats a tough one. I have a couple, I think my post about overcoming a quarter life crisis was one of my favourites but I also loved my post on must read books for bloggers! I really enjoyed writing about my thoughts on full time blogging, which went down well, as well as a post about feeling like I don’t fit in as a blogger.
Do you find that the blog posts you enjoy writing the most correspond with the highest views?
Most of the time, no! I find that a lot of the time it’s the posts that I don’t expect to do well that end up surprising me. 90% of the time my more personal posts will go down best and I do love writing them, because they are kind of like therapy for me.
What would be your criteria when working with a brand? Like what do you look for?
I only ever work with brands that feel like a good ‘fit’ for me, and that I would happily spend my own money on. I’m really lucky to work with some incredible brands and still pinch myself every day. I turn down the vast majority of opportunities I’m offered as a lot of them just don’t sit right with me- it tends to be a gut feeling.
You have expanded @bycharlotteann into a business, with your ‘blog and beyond’ page and also digital marketing for others. How do you find the time to make everything work as well as it does? Your time management must be insane!?
I have to be super organised to stay on top of it all, so I write a lot of lists. I put every single thing in my diary or the calendar on my phone so I’m always aware of what I need to be doing. I’ll write a to-do list every day, and highlight my top two or three priorities for that day. As long as I can get those done, it’s been a successful day, and I try not to put too much on my schedule at once!
With all of the work you do, you must be good at taking yourself away from it all and having a relax. What does your perfect relaxation day look like?
I’m pretty terrible at switching off, to be honest. It’s something I’m trying to work on, but I feel like my mind is always racing! I think my perfect day off would be spent in the garden, on a hammock with a really good book, or if it’s raining then playing The Sims all day then going out for dinner or eating a takeaway on the couch in my pyjamas whilst getting stuck into a good tv series. I’d finish it off with a bubble bath and an early night!
What would be your biggest piece of advice for someone who is considering starting a blog like @bycharlotteann?
Don’t be afraid to forge your own path. There are so many blogs out there these days that it can feel hard to stand out, but no one out there can be the same person as you. Write about the things you love, share your personality and put your own spin on things your passion will shine through and the rest will fall into place!
What has been your favourite day of 2018 so far?
I think it would be the day I found out that I had the results I needed to get into third year at my first choice university. I’d had a really tough time whilst completing my final major project, with my dad being hospitalised and having to have major surgery, but I persevered and it paid off!
As I talk a lot about beauty on my blog, I will have the last question as something beauty related. What is your holy grail product?
I think it has to be either Pixi Glow Tonic or The Body Shop’s Camomile Cleansing Oil- two wonder products that I couldn’t be without!
So thats the interview! Thank you so much to Charlotte from @bycharlotteann for wanting to take part and feature on the series, I loved getting the chance to talk to her and ask her some questions.
