I found Alice from Fabulous Hannah, who i’m sure you will have heard of. I had a look at Alice’s youtube channel and absolutely loved it, and after we followed and messaged a few times I knew that I wanted her to feature on ‘a chat with’. Alice has recently graduated, does youtube and owns a graphic design business, so she is all round a complete girl boss. I love her!
As always, my text will be in bold and Alice’s will be in a regular font.
What made you start your youtube channel? Was it planned or a spontaneous decision one day?
It was definitely planned over a long time of watching YouTube and always feeling so inspired by it. I’ve watched YouTube since about the age of 12, and I’m 23 now so it has been a while! I actually have a super cringe channel that I started when I was 15 doing ‘music videos’ which basically consisted of me dancing around in my back garden and lip syncing to various songs. Despite some taunting from my peers at school, that’s where I found my love for video editing and the YouTube community.
I then grew out of that cringe channel, thank goodness, and took a little break. Fast forward to 2013 when I had just left sixth form and that is when I created my current channel. It’s been a long ol’ ride with my little corner of the internet, but I continue to love it. I am SO happy that I didn’t let people discourage me from pursuing my love.
What is your favourite social media platform to post on? I love your Instagram feed!
Ooooh, thank you, I do love Instagram to be honest! I particularly enjoy the stories feature as it gives me the ability to chat with my viewers instantly and just showcase my raw, uncut and unedited life. I also love editing photos and pretending I can actually pose for them. I regularly just scroll down my own feed to remember all of the happy memories.
I am currently at university and I know that you graduated last summer, what is your biggest tip for a university student like me?
Balance! Get out of the house, spend time with your friends, and don’t beat yourself up for not instantly getting your work done when it is set. For me, the most valuable thing I have taken away from university is the friendships and life experience. I’ll remember it for those lovely things, not how quickly I got my deadlines complete. As long as you’re working your hardest and making time for yourself, you’ll do great!
What degree did you do, and did you enjoy it?
I did a Media Production degree at the University of Lincoln, which was basically a mixture of all different types of media forms (photography, graphics, film, tv, script writing, radio). I chose the course because I have always known that I wanted a creative job, but never really knew where exactly my passion lies. This was a great course for that! It showed me the good and the bad of those six topics and I managed to settle on graphic design in my final year. It’s funny how things change because I originally wanted to be a photographer, then a tv presenter, and now I think I’ve finally found my place.
What would you say to someone who is thinking of starting a youtube channel? I have always wanted to but I’m so nervous!
So cliche, but just do it!! I could’ve easily let my inner demons talk me out of creating my current channel. Especially after the cringe one I first created. But I haven’t had a single regret about starting it. It’s made me who I am today!
I am in love with your graphic designs and I definitely am going to get you to commission me for my blog rebrand this year! How do you manage everything? Your time management skills must be insane!
Thank you so much! To be honest I’m just a nerdy workaholic and I love being busy. But don’t get me wrong, I have major meltdowns sometimes when everything gets on top of me. Some practical tips for time management; use a shared calendar. I have a Google calendar that is connected to all of my devices. This means I can check what I have coming up and add new things into it wherever I am. I also have a desk planner, which I designed myself (woo), that I write on every week and this gives me a great feeling when I tick things off with my shiny gold pen. I also allow myself to have some time off, my brain needs rest sometimes and I won’t work my best if I’m forcing it. So I’ll go and chill and get back to it later.
I found your account from the lovely Hannah, and I love getting recommendations of people to watch and follow! Who are you loving at the moment?
If you’re into graphic design or art content I really love Furry Little Peach, CharliMarieTV, and Will Paterson. For the lifestyle I have to go with my old faithfuls; The Sacconejolys, Louise Pentland, Zoella. And a channel that I always loveeeee for uni content: Jess Ratchford.
What are you most excited about in 2019?
A few things, it’s so hard to pick! Travelling is definitely up there in the list. I went to Budapest in January, I’m off to London (again) soon for Vidcon, then I’m looking to go and see my uni pal in Norway. Amongst a few more city breaks – if my wallet can handle it of course, I’m also so excited to get things moving with the graphic design content on my channel. And I’m actually currently in the process of a big overhaul on my website.
What can we expect to see from ‘Alice Thorpe’ as a brand this year?
So my website is going to be the big change. I want to make it the central hub for everything #AlicesArmy. I’m going to be offering exclusive freebies, tutorials, behind the scenes, and bespoke content for my hardcore #AlicesArmy friends. Which makes me so happy! It’s a long old process and I’m doing it all alone. But I’m hoping that it’ll help to unite this little community and help others who are into the creative graphic design / YouTube stuff that I am.
I talk a lot about beauty on my blog so we will have the last question as something beauty related, what is your holy grail beauty product?
Can I choose three? I’m so indecisive. Collection Lasting Perfection concealer for those annoying under eye circles, Rimmel Stay Matte Powder to get rid of that shine, and Maybelline Lash Sensational for full lashes that won’t transfer onto your skin.
Thanks so much for having me on your blog! It’s been a pleasure x
So that is the post! I hope you love Alice as much as I do and if you want to go check out her work then click below to be redirected to her social media pages.
