I wasn’t actually going to do a full post on this but I had such a good day at big weekend that I knew I wanted to remember every detail… so this is how this post came about! In case you don’t know, Radio 1 big weekend is a festival hosted in a different part of the country each year. Its a pretty big deal in the UK, so when I saw it was coming to Middlesbrough (about an hour away from me) we were determined to get tickets. And we did! I have actually never been to a festival before, but as soon as I saw the lineup for big weekend I just knew that me and my best friend needed to go and experience it for myself. Some of my favourite acts were performing and it was quite local to me this year so it was a no brainer.
Firstly, I apologise for the severe lack of photos in this post. I was originally never going to post a big weekend post so I didn’t have ‘blogging’ photos in my mind… plus I was having far too much of a good time to think about getting my camera out every 30 seconds. If you do want to see videos and photos of the day then I am sure Radio 1 have plenty of clips on their website for you to check out.
I know a lot of you follow my blog for fashion content so I thought to include my outfit in this post. I LOVE these photos, Isy did such a good job of being my Instagram husband for the day! This outfit was so out of my comfort zone but I actually ended up feeling so confident and loving it. The trousers* are from New Look and my bandeau top* is from boohoo… and paired with my chunky trainers it made a fabulous big weekend outfit but so comfy too. Although for most of the day I was covered in a huge raincoat because of the typical British festival weather.
We started the day off by having a walk around and working out our way around, and from that we stumbled across Sam Fender. Now I have heard of him but I haven’t really listened to his music but he was so good, and since then I have started listening to his music. Although my personal highlight of the whole sam fender experience was a girl coming over to me, asking if she could have a wee, handed me her phone and then proceeded to squat in the middle of the tent…. It was both hilarious and slightly disturbing at the same time.
Now for my personal favourite highlight of the day… Billie Eilish. If you know me you know how much I love her, so I was so excited to see her perform live at big weekend. And she certainly did not disappoint. We danced, we sang and we partied whilst she jumped around like crazy on the stage. You could tell how much fun she was having, and because of that we were having so much fun too. So much fun I didn’t even take any photos!
I was gutted that there was a clash with Lewis Capaldi, so as much as I love him I knew that seeing Billie was the smarter idea because Lewis Capaldi is touring the UK next year whereas she isn’t. I was so disjointed though as I watched his set afterwards and it looked amazing! We ended up sprinting and hearing the last song, but I wish I could have seen more.
We tended to stay around main stage all day because our favourite acts were performing there, and next up there was James Arthur. I wasn’t expecting much to be honest as I am not the greatest fan of his music, but I genuinely did really enjoy his set and his crowd was actually the best of the whole day. Everyone was singing and we were so close to the front, which was a good experience. James Arthur is actually from near Middlesborough himself and his local charm definitely got the whole crowd going!
We took a break after this and went for some food. There was so many food vendors all around the outside of big weekend, so there was no shortage of choice. We opted for the Mac n cheese, and although it was so expensive, it did taste really good. That is one of my biggest festival tips- even if the prices are so high make sure that you eat and drink. Throughout big weekend I didn’t drink half as much as I needed to (thats what you get for valuing your bank balance more than your hydration), and I ended up with a huge headache. Budget a bit more and make sure you drink… alcohol doesn’t count!
After refuelling, we headed back into big weekend to see Khalid. I don’t know much about Khalid but I loved the song he did with Billie Eilish so I knew I needed to see him. I loved all of this songs and, like Sam Fender, I have added quite a few songs of his to my playlist after big weekend. And then my favourite moment happened…. In a random moment he said ‘now I am going to bring my best friend on the stage’ and casually walks on Billie AGAIN. My favourite song is ‘lovely’ and I got to see them both perform it live, which I know is such a treat as it isn’t very often they are in the same place. Again- I didn’t even take any photos of this because I was so in the moment, and it was so amazing. One of my fave memories of big weekend for sure!
After Khalid we had about 2 hours to wait before the headliner, so we had another break and a sit down. We were so tried and aching from all of the dancing, so a sit down (even though it was raining) was very welcomed. We ended up getting the giggles (I think because we were so tired) and we also ended up seeing Molly and Liv, who as you know I absolutely love. I’ve met Molly quite a few times now but I haven’t met Liv before, so it was nice to finally meet her.
Then for the headliner… and it was MILEY CYRUS. She is my complete childhood icon and I still can’t believe that I actually saw her live, and she sang some of my all-time favourite songs too, such as Party in the USA and Jolene. We ended up standing pretty far back for Miley as we were so tired and couldn’t be bothered fighting the crowds like we did for Billie and James Arthur, but it actually turned out to be a much better atmosphere because people were dancing and weren’t so cramped.
I feel like this was such a rambly post but I want to remember this day forever, as it was so much fun. If you get the opportunity to go to big weekend, definitely try and get tickets. As always thank you so much for reading this, as this is the first summer post I have written and I am so excited for so many more to come soon. This was the best start to summer possible and I’m so happy that I got to experience it with my best friend.
