If you google university must haves, a lot of things come up but they all seem to be quite generic and from big websites. I thought that I would do my own version with 5 university must haves, but maybe things that you haven’t seen on other sites. I have been at university for the past year so I think I have some first hand experience of what to take, and some slightly non-generic things that I wish I had taken when I moved.
I didn’t pack these initially, but ended up buying a cheap pair from primark when I moved, and they have definitely turned into one of my university must haves. Flip flops have plenty of uses, and are much better than slippers as you can actually wear them outside.
- Kitchen floors are usually pretty sticky, so they are useful for when you are walking around the main kitchen.
- If you have a shared bathroom, they could be useful for walking to and from the bathroom, or even showering wearing them if you shower floor is not very hygienic!
- Because you can wear them outside, they are useful to slip on if you are popping outside to pick up a takeaway or let your friend in.
I ended up taking so many photos when I moved to uni, and they certainly turned into one of my university must haves… so much so that they became the theme of this blog photoshoot! University rooms are usually a pretty blank canvas, but you always have a pin board that you can stick photos too. I mentioned it in my ‘how to make a university room feel like home’ post, but I think having some photos of home really makes you feel more settled in what can be a lonely space. Plus, if you friends come round it becomes a fab conversation starter to talk about your home life and friends from your hometown. I printed mine from Printiki*, and they are so cheap but really good quality.
Pack of cards
I never had a pack of cards at university and I really regretted not taking any, as I always ended using other people’s. A pack of cards is definitely one of my university must haves, because they are basically the core of every pre drinking games… and they happen a lot! Card drinking games definitely bring people together at uni, so having a pack of cards to hand will definitely help you to socialise. Its something thats never on people’s ‘to bring’ list, but should be as everyone forgets to bring them.
This isn’t really something you can pack, but it needs to be on this university must haves list, because it is super important and can save you a lot of money (which is important as a student!). A 16-25 railcard allows you to receive 30% of any train journey, which is super important if you are travelling home a lot to see your family. Plus, if you are going for nights out at your friend’s university cities as well, it will help you save money. Definitely a worthwhile investment, and its only £30, so you will make the money back in savings so quickly.
I think everyone will pack comfy clothes, but I don’t think people understand how many comfy clothes that they need to bring. When I am at uni, I basically only wear comfy clothes as everyone dresses very casual. When you are hanging around in the kitchen, chilling n your room, going to the library or even going to lectures, comfy clothes are a necessity. Nobody cares what you look like! Bring plenty of leggings, jogging bottoms, slouchy tops and hoodies. Plus a dressing gown is a must to throw on during the day or on an evening. Go to primark, buy loads of chilled clothes and you will be fine.
I think that these 5 university must haves are super important to take, and should definitely be on your packing list if you are moving to university this year. Thank you so much for reading this, and I hope that this post has helped if you are moving to university soon and not sure what to take. I am also going to do a ‘university anti haul’ next week, filled with things that I wish I hadn’t taken and what I regret bringing. I hope that helps too!
