Sophie from @sophsaysblog is one of my favourite people EVER, and one of my biggest supporters both on and offline. We met because of the internet and attending the lush blog event back in the day, and from that we just became online besties. She will never fail to support me, hype me up, and is always only a message away (and we talk most days about everything and nothing). I’m very lucky that the internet brought us together. Sophie actually has a makeup Instagram page over at @sophsaysblog, and I would love for you to check it out after reading this interview. She is amazing and I’m sure you will love her.
From now on my text will be in bold, and Sophie’s answers will be in a regular font.
What made you start @sophsaysblog? Was it planned or a spontaneous decision one day?
I actually started @sophsaysblog during my AS level revision. I love to procrastinate, so instead of writing essays I decided that setting up a website and an Instagram for lifestyle and makeup would be a good idea! (Side note: I do not recommend doing this.) I plunged a lot of work into it for a while, but slowly lost touch with it because I was pretending to know all this stuff and basically be an authoritative figure about makeup, but that’s so not me. After about a year and a half away from the Instagram page, you invited me to your launch party for IRB, and everyone was saying I should give it another go. So I promised myself I would be completely myself and only post the things I wanted to, not the things I thought people wanted to read, and started back up in January and I’ve been loving it ever since.
What is your favourite and least favourite thing about Instagram?
I love seeing everyone’s creations. Instagram is such a melting pot of insane talent, and I’m inspired every single day by not only makeup artists, but random things like painters and craft pages! The makeup community that I have managed to find myself in has also been mostly so positive, probably because I don’t have enough followers to be getting hate or rude comments yet!
My least favourite thing would probably be the algorithm, which I know most people would say too. I cannot believe the amount of posts I miss that are brand new because they are buried under people with higher follower counts, and honestly it makes me feel really guilty when I haven’t responded to someone I know’s posts! I wish they could put it back to normal, because it’s pretty hard not only having to promote my own stuff more than I should, but to fish out the posts from other smaller bloggers!
What is your favourite makeup look that you have ever done on @sophsaysblog?
This is definitely a toss up between my rainbow look or the party look I did for your story takeover! I remember setting out with not the greatest hopes for the rainbow look (I had only just managed to figure out how to do a cut crease), but when I finished I literally sat back, stared at my eye and took approximately 524913 photos to send to my friends! I was so proud of myself, and I think that was the start of my realisation that I could be creative and colourful and it could look good!
Despite this, the story takeover look is one I have come back to again and again because it’s just perfect for summer parties or going for drinks, and I’ve really been bashing the pink eyeshadow recently! Plus “queen” are my fave lashes and they look so good with that look!
If you could give someone who wants to start an makeup Instagram like @sophsaysblog one piece of advice, what would it be?
DO IT! Do it, but go into it with an idea of what you want to post, and don’t be afraid to change it up if you feel you’ve outgrown it! At the time of writing this, I have literally just changed my theme up after about five months of one theme because I felt restricted by it, and that’s okay! Your first year at least will be purely experimental, and it’s so fun. Also, don’t pay attention to your follow count, mine wavered from 370-375 for months, and I’m currently stuck again at around the 384 mark! Instagram is doing some pretty sketchy stuff at the minute with their algorithms and are constantly deleting spam accounts, so this number will never truly reflect the number of people you reach. Instead, pay attention to your insights, see how many people saved your post, how many it reached, and just keep a slight interest there. Never get obsessed with numbers unless you’re trying to really grow fast, because it might not be as fun that way. But remember, it is yours and you only have to post what you want to and what makes you happy!
Enough of the makeup questions, now onto university as most of my readers are students. What do you take at university, and do you enjoy it?
I study English Language and Linguistics and I do enjoy it! My first year of uni was a struggle because some of the core modules were the opposite of what I am interested in and I hated them, but you just have to grin and bare it until second year, where you can usually choose all of the modules you want!
A lot of my readers will be starting university in September- do you have any advice?
Be kind to yourself. If you miss a lecture, catch up on it! Falling behind at uni is very different to school, and you need to graft it whether you’re in the lecture theatre or catching up at home. If you wake up one day and you are really struggling, it’s okay to miss the odd lecture, just please make sure you catch up on it with a cup of tea and keep on track of everything. Don’t be a milk stealer or a dirty-dish-leaver. Don’t let your bathroom go mouldy. Save your laundry until you only have a couple outfits left because Circuit Laundry is horrifically expensive. Never run out of coffee, tea bags, instant noodles, or underwear. YOU ARE NEVER BROKE ENOUGH TO BUY CHEAP TOILET ROLL. Also, don’t run out of toilet roll. Be kind to your flatmates even if they aren’t the sort of people you would usually be friends with! You might not become best friends with all of them, or any of them, and that’s perfectly okay, but you do live with them and it’s much nicer to live in a civil flat! Also, take your time making friends! Talk to EVERYONE because you are all in the exact same boat, and if they aren’t friendly that’s their problem, not yours! My university squads weren’t really set until about half way through second semester, and I now just have the greatest friends ever, and cannot imagine being without them.
Do you have any long term plans for after university? A dream job perhaps?
So I decided to take English Lang not only because I love it, but because it leaves a lot of doors open. My ideas about what I want to do in future change every few months, and at the moment I’m toying with the idea of moving into bridal journalism and potentially wedding planning! I could never work in a job that is the same every day, so a job like journalism where I can work on a project for some time, see a finished product, then move on, is probably perfect for me! If not bridal, I can definitely imagine some sort of beauty journalism, or even editing!
What has been your favourite day of 2019 so far?
Just to be super awkward, it’s not a specific day as such, but more of a 24 hour period! Myself and my boyfriend went up to Glasgow for my sister’s 22nd birthday in May, and it was my first “long drive”. Because of traffic, I was in my Fiat 500 for EIGHT HOURS. This is why I cannot possibly count that morning as my best day. That evening though, we all got dressed up in 1920s clothes and went to the Gatsby night they have around May every year, and it was so fun! Just before the show started, my parents showed up with a tray of tequila slammers and surprised us all! We danced and sang and I even pulled the robe off a burlesque dancer in front of everyone. The next morning, myself, my boyfriend, and my sister went to a T. Rex exhibition in Glasgow. I’m a super huge nerd and I love dinosaurs, and this was one of the three most complete T. Rex skeletons in the world, so obviously we had to go. It was so impressive and I was in my element, and we weren’t even that hungover from the night before! I basically just smiled for a solid 24 hours, doing my fave things (drinking tequila and looking at dinos), with my fave people.
What can we expect to see from @sophsaysblog in the future?
Above everything else, I would love to start incorporating lifestyle posts into my feed, but I’m not too sure how to make it fit in with my current theme (if anyone has any ideas please message me!). I can’t wait to start making posts about student life, plus size styling, Sheffield, York, long distance relationships, and everything in between, I just have to figure out how first! I want to expand what I post and how I post it, but would probably like to keep within the confines of Instagram for now!
As I talk a lot about beauty on my blog, we will have the last question as something beauty related. What is your holy grail product?
Damn, you just had to ask the hardest question you could ever ask a makeup fan. Besides “queen” by Indigo Rosee Beauty, at the moment I couldn’t live without my Beauty Bay EYN Matte Brights palette! This is probably because when I bought it, my makeup game changed. I was able to create any look I wanted because I wasn’t restricted with colours anymore; I had the whole spectrum in front of me! I would so recommend to anyone looking to increase their skills or even to people who are just bored of their current makeup, go buy something SUPER BRIGHT AND FUN and have an experiment! I wouldn’t have thought a couple months ago that I would wear pink and yellow eyeshadow as my go-to look, yet here I am.
You might surprise yourself if you throw yourself into the deep end.
So that is the post! I hope you love Sophie from @sophsaysblog as much as I do and if you want to go check out her work then click here to be redirected to @sophsaysblog on Instagram.
