I am sure that you have all heard of Hannah (from fabulous Hannah), and if you haven’t… where have you been? Fabulous Hannah is one of my favourite youtubers and she has been since around 2015/2016. Her main focuses are lifestyle, fashion and occasionally beauty, with a whole lot of humour thrown in there too. We first got talking after I sent her some IRBeauty lashes back in July, and then we met for the first time at SITC 2019. I can honeslty say that she is lovely and exactly the same on and off camera, and made me feel so welcome into her group for the whole Saturday of SITC. I am honoured that she was willing to feature on my series!
As always, my questions will be in bold and Hannah’s answers will be in regular font.
What made you start fabulous Hannah? Was it planned or a spontaneous decision one day?
I created my channel back in 2013 when I was just about to start my GCSE’s. I was a huge worrier in school, I overthought everything and felt like I needed something to take my mind off of exam stress. I loved watching YouTube, so I decided to start making videos myself as an outlet. Thank god I did!
I know that a lot of people in the industry (me included!) look up to you because of your success in the industry. Do you feel the pressure of having a large audience or does it feel the same as when you first started?
Firstly, thank you! In some ways, I feel exactly the same as when I first started my channel. I still say the things I want to say, I still film and edit in the style I enjoy most and although I’ve progressed and grown up, a lot has stayed the same. I don’t feel pressured to act a certain way online, but I am definitely more cautious in some aspects. As my channel grew, I became more aware about how the words I say could affect certain people watching my videos. My audience is predominantly young girls, so I try to be careful about only ever having a positive impact on their lives and their mindsets. I’m trying to set an example, while still being authentically myself.
You have been able to work with some really fab brands over the past few years- what are your main factors to consider before you start working with a brand? Do you have a favourite brand you have worked with?
Whenever a brand deal lands in my email inbox, my first thoughts are always 1) do I love the product? and 2) could this product benefit my audience? If the answer to either of those questions is no, I’d polite decline the deal. But if I feel a relationship with the brand could blossom, I get really excited about it. Working with brands is one of my favourite aspects of the job as I enjoy working to a deadline and I’ve always been keen to please! I’ve worked with some amazing brands, too many to pick one favourite. But some of the most memorable brands I’ve worked with have been The Body Shop, Sony Music and Byron Burger (food brands are always fun!)
Do you find that the videos you enjoy making the most correspond with the highest views?
Not always. It’s a tricky one, because sometimes I’ll absolutely LOVE creating a video, I’ll be really happy with the result and then it might not perform how I was hoping it to. Most of the time, the title and thumbnail are key. It could be a hilarious video, but if the title isn’t of interest to the viewer, they’ll never find out! It can be frustrating, but I still get so much satisfaction out of creating content that it balances it out. Other times, videos I expect to perform averagely, manage to hit the YouTube algorithm and get a lot more views that I thought they would. It’s impossible to predict, but as long as I’m happy with the videos I’m producing, I always feel fulfilled.
What has been the most surreal moment to come out of Fabulous Hannah so far?
I was part of a campaign with The Body Shop back in 2017 which was so surreal. I was the face of the iconic body butter (the mango scent to be specific!). Tubs with my face on were in stores all over the country, pictures of a few other influencers and I were in the store windows and we attended events together too. It was incredible, a highlight was popping into my local store with my mum to see the product. I think my mum actually cried when we saw it haha!
What is one piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to start a youtube channel like fabulous Hannah?
My main piece of advice would be to create the type of videos that you enjoy watching yourself. Focus your energy on creating a great contribution to the community and you’ll always feel satisfied. I know it’s difficult, but don’t focus on numbers. It can be really hard to grow your channel and is often a slow burner. Don’t let that put you off, keep going and you never know what could happen.
I am currently at university, so student life and studying consumes a lot of my life (and my blog!). Did you enjoy school and sixth form? Are you glad you didn’t go to university?
The years at sixth form were my favourite school years. I started to find my feet and made some friends that I still speak to most days. I was fairly quiet in secondary school so I didn’t enjoy it as much. I was really lucky that I was never bullied and got on well with everyone, but I’ve always been more creative than academic. Don’t get me wrong, I worked hard in school and was pleased with all my results – I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making videos. Media and drama were my favourite subjects by far, maths was my worst subject. NO THANK YOUUUU! As for uni, I’m really glad I decided against it. Obviously everyone is different, there’s no right or wrong answer as to whether you should go to uni or not. But for me, I wasn’t sure what pathway I wanted to go down and I didn’t want to get a degree half-heartedly. If I hadn’t put my efforts into my channel instead, this wouldn’t be my career today. I feel incredibly lucky, and I’m pleased with the decisions I’ve made in my life so far.
What has been your favourite day of 2019 so far?
This summer, I went to visit one of my closest friends in Portsmouth. She moved there for uni, so my whole girl squad took a trip to spend a week in a different city. On one of the days we were there, the sun was shining and it was 30 degrees, so we went on pedalos, got ice creams and finished the day with disposable barbeque’s in the park. We spent the whole day laughing and taking pictures on disposable cameras. It’s a day I’ll never forget, and I’ll always remember how happy I felt to be with my best friends having the summer we always talked about when we were back in sixth form.
What can we expect to see from you and fabulous Hannah going into 2020?
I would absolutely love to practice my presenting skills next year. I’d love to dabble in reality TV and try something new. But I definitely want to continue making the content I’m loving on Youtube too. I feel like I’ve found my place on YouTube recently, I love making 24 hour challenges, food-related videos or fashion videos with a funny twist. Who knows what trends YouTube will come up with in 2020, but I’m excited to take part whatever it may be!
As I started my blog as a beauty blog, we will have the last question as something beauty orientated. What is your holy grail product?
Hands down, without a shadow of a doubt, I would have the say The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Cream Cleanser. I use it every single night without fail, and my skin seems to love it. It’s been my holy grail product for years, it’s definitely my skin secret (that I have shared with every person I know haha!).
So that is the post! I hope you love Hannah from Fabulous Hannah as much as I do and if you want to go check out her work then click below to be redirected to her social media. Thank you so much to Hannah for featuring!
