I asked for blog post requests on my Facebook group a while ago now, and a few people mentioned me doing ‘A week in my life’ post. I thought this was really interesting because I haven’t really done anything like this before, and my life isn’t really typical of a university student with me living at home and also running my business, so I thought it would be interesting to show you what my week looks like, and how I balance everything to fit into a week. I love being a busy person, and this week is no more or less busy than any other, but I love my lifestyle at the moment.
This is the week beginning 21st October 2019, because I pre-schedule posts in advance. This may seem outdated now, but every week is similar so I don’t think it makes any difference, apart from me planning black Friday! I also barely take any photos in a typical week in my life (unless I’m shooting specific content), so here are some fabulous photos from Ami which I love. Her photography is amazing!
We are starting this week in my life with a rainy Monday morning! I am in Manchester for this first part of this week, so we started this morning by a bit of a longer lie in than I was planning, then getting the train to Leeds, via the post office where I sent the weekends order for IRB (because I don’t ship over the weekend).
I always work on the train, so I got started on some laptop work whilst I was traveling. Working on the train is the best way for me to keep on top of everything and be productive whilst commuting to and from uni.
I arrived in Leeds around 11:30, and walked up to my class. I had one seminar 1-2, but I had some time before so I grabbed some food before the class. It was an macroeconomics seminar, and although I find the class difficult, I think I made some progress with my questions.
After the class, I had an hour break and then I had a meeting. In one of my modules we have to do a group project, so I met with the group to discuss our plans and work on the presentation. Group projects are probably one of my least favourite things about uni, but we actually were productive quickly and it didn’t take that long to piece the presentation together.
I was back on the train about 16:30, and in my comfy clothes having a cuppa in Manchester at 18:00. It seemed like quite a long day because of the gaps between my classes but I was super productive and got everything ticked off my to do list. Plus I ended the night with a Spag Bol and a good old Instagram catchup chatting to customers over DM and liking people’s photos that use my lashes.
I have Tuesday and Wednesday off university because I was able to condense my timetable due to commuting, which is so handy for my current lifestyle. I was in Manchester the whole day with the aim of getting university work done, so I woke up early with a super long to do list.
John had uni from 11-2pm, so I walked with him to uni and then sat in a coffee shop and got work done for a few hours. Working in coffee shops is one of my favourite things to do, and definitely features in a lot in my life! Whilst I was at the coffee shop I put one of my motivational playlists on and worked on some powerpoints, whilst sipping coffee. I am always so productive in coffee shops!
I walked back at 2pm, and after a late lunch, we did a couple more hours of work. In this time I watched a lecture that I missed the week before and made some detailed notes, and also made a plan of what I wanted to do the next day. Time flies when you are working and before I knew it it was around 9pm.
Throughout the day I have also been working on Black Friday for IRB, because I know that is coming up next month (It will have been and gone now for you reading this!) and I want to make sure that I am offering some fab deals, without losing too much money. I spent a lot of the day doing some market research with customers about what deals were best, and trying to calculate how much discount I can offer on my spreadsheets. I tend to work on things like this a month or so in advance, so I can make sure that everything is organised and it is not a huge rush the week before.
I had a quick shower and fake tanned (because I had an event the following day), and then got a relatively early night. Typical week in my life really!
Up bright and early this morning! John had a class at 9am, so I got up at the same time as him so I started work at around 9am too. I decided not to leave the house, because we were going out later on and I needed to use the whiteboard to do some work.
I spent the majority of the morning trying to plan my philosophy essay, but I wasn’t actually too productive. I think it is because I am always more productive when I am enjoying what I am working on, and philosophy is my least favourite subject by a mile. I really struggle with working on the concepts, and getting my head around the ideas, so I tend to procrastinate more. Its such a bad habit! I got quite a lot done though, and with a bit more work on Thursday and Friday night, I should be able to get a good plan formed. Its a 2000 word essay, so a good plan is crucial and will be so helpful next week when I start to write the essay. There had to be some point in this week in my life where I procrastinate, I cannot be motivated 24/7.
I had some lunch, and started to pack my suitcase because I was leaving Manchester the day after. I also did a good hour of admin tasks, such as replying to emails, printing off some seminar work and answering comments/DM’s. My Christmas launch is next week so I am getting a lot more messages than usual, so I’m trying to stay on top of customer questions and repost as many people as possible in the run up to the big day.
After my work was finished, I started getting ready for a press event at The botanist. You will have already seen the blog post about this so I won’t talk about it too much but it was a really nice evening, and so nice to have a night off. We ate some fab food, and it was so nice to have a date night with John… even if I did have one too many cocktails! Don’t give a student a free cocktail bar at a press event… you know exactly what will happen!
I had a bit of a lie in this morning, because I didn’t need to leave the house until half 10 (because I only have classes in the afternoon on Thursday). I was leaving Manchester, so I finished packing and got the train to Leeds via the post office for the past few days orders to be sent.
On Thursday I am on the train quite a lot, so I got some seminar preparation work done on the train, and I also wrote up the botanist blog review from the night before whilst everything was fresh in my head.
I had two seminar classes and a lecture in the afternoon. The two seminar classes both involved presentations (one in a group and one alone), and I alway get so nervous about public speaking but I am glad I did it. I was graded a 68% in one of them, which I am so happy with as presentations really aren’t my thing. I also booked an office hour session with one of my module leaders to talk through my assignment ideas.
I got the train back home about 4pm, so I was back home at 6. It was so nice to be home and see my family as I haven’t been home in over a week (which is quite a long time for me), and finally have a bath! If you know me, you will know how much I love having a bath and I can never have one when I am away in Manchester. I treated myself to a soak, and then spent an hour or so doing some admin tasks before bed such as replying to customer DM’s and scheduling a blog post. I felt so tired so I made sure got an early night, as Friday is quite an early start.
I left the house at 8am this morning, and set off back to the train station. Its a busy life! I haven’t driven for a week so I was a bit rusty, and if you have seen this post you will know that driving certainly isn’t my favourite thing! I did some seminar reading on the train, was in Leeds for about 10am, and then walked up to my seminar.
I had one philosophy seminar, which was very average. Usually I hate philosophy seminars as I always struggle to understand the reading, but our tutor made it seem more straightforward than I made it in my head!
I then had a 2 hour gap, and then a lecture 2-4. Although lets keep it real in this a week in my life post, I didn’t go to my last lecture. I always struggle to keep up in Economics lectures because the leader speaks so quickly and I am very slow to understand the maths based concepts, so I decided to give the lecture a miss. Don’t worry though- at university everything is recorded so I am going to make a conscious effort to watch it over the weekend and make proper notes on Sunday. I did this a few weeks ago and it made me feel so much better about the whole topic because I could go at my own pace by pausing the lecture and making more detailed notes instead of falling behind and feeling shit about myself afterwards.
After getting the train home, I walked to the post office to post the last of this weeks orders, and then drove back home. Once I was home I had some food and then worked on watching up some lectures to make revision notes. I then spent my evening in front of the TV watching gogglebox with my family and re-reading some philosophy text that I want to include in my assignment next week. I’m trying to space out the planning of my philosophy essay as much as possible before the deadline on the 18th November, as I have a lot of other things planned in that time relating to the new Christmas launch.
Saturday is obviously a day off from uni, so today I was at work. I am not sure that many people know theses I don’t really reference it on my blog much, but I work part time at a clothing shop in my town one day a week. I like being able to add something to my CV from a fashion retail perspective (which is ultimately what I want to go into as a conventional job) and the extra money a month is always helpful as a student. I had a shift from 9-17:30 so I spent the majority of the day there, and there isn’t really anything to say about it. Pretty boring, and a pretty average work day in the week in my life.
When I got home, I took a couple of hours to myself to have a soak in the bath and a catch up with my family. I always need some time to relax after work before I start another project.
I was quite tired in the evening, so I opted to work on my finances instead of university work. As IRBeauty is a limited company, I have to sort out my expenses and send them to my accountant within a certain time frame, so I spent a couple of hours sorting out my receipts and organising them. Its not a difficult job but its a long one, and the more I learn about business finances the more I realise that business A level taught me nothing! I am genuinely considering taking a night class or an online course about running a small business next year, so that I know the basics and don’t have to rely on me asking 101 questions to my grandad (who also runs a business). I am definitely learning as I go along though, which is always a good sign!
Getting an early night was also top on the priority list, because I was tired from work and have a lot of studying I needed to do on Sunday.
Today I have had a full day at home and it was blissful, I haven’t had a full day at home in a good 2 weeks! I spent the day in my joggers working, and mainly focused on my economics notes. My macroeconomics module is what I am most struggling on at the moment (it is so difficult) so I really gave it the time that it deserved and spent a good few hours consolidating my lecture notes into revision notes so far. I need to stay on top of it otherwise I know I will fall behind so quickly.
I did have a long break in the middle of the day though because my uncle and his girlfriend came to visit, which was lovely. It was nice to just have a day at home without any pressure to leave the house!
Overall it was a boring day because of the amount of studying I did, but I got a lot ticked off my to do list and I am definitely going into the week more refreshed. Which takes me up to now! It is now Sunday evening, and my last job of the day is to finish writing this and then get it uploaded… which is strange considering it is currently 27th October and you won’t be reading this until December. I have to pre-schedule posts so far in advance because of how busy I am, which is evident looking at this post!
So that was a typical week in my life. It was nice to reflect on each day for a week, although it has made me realise that I do way too much work… I didn’t have a day off all week! Life is busy, but its amazing, and I am always so much happier when I am busy (even if I am a little more stressed). As always thank you so much for reading this and coming on this crazy journey, which allows me to do half of the things I am talking about in this week in my life.
