This post has been on my list of ‘to write’ for ages but I have just never got around to it. This is probably because my skin has actually been clearing up a lot recently, so I haven’t had many breakouts in the past few months. However, a few weeks ago I ended up with a large breakout on my face, so put some of these tips on how to help stop your breakouts fast into practice… and so decided to bring this post back out of the drafts. I hope its useful for some of you too.
Like I said, my skin has generally got a lot better over the past few years, despite going through a really bad patch in 2017/2018. Now my breakouts are mainly hormonal, or as a result of my own bad choices (such as too many nights out or too many McDonalds’s). My skin was generally having a good time recently, however exam season (and post exam nights out) was the downfall of my skin and I ended up with a huge breakout around my nose and chin. It really effected my confidence because I haven’t had a breakout in ages, and therefore I wanted to stop it fast!
Here are the main things that I have found to help stop your breakouts fast:
I think that most people who have a skincare routine choose to cleanse their skin to remove makeup and general grime at the end of the day. However, a single cleanse (especially if it is a micellar water) doesn’t actually remove every last trace of makeup, and that is what could be causing your breakouts. It takes longer but if you are struggling with your skin right now, a really good way to help stop your breakouts fast would be to introduce a two step cleanse into your routine. There are so many different cleansers you can use but my favourite include The Body shop chamomile butter and the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish. Or alternatively you can use a micellar water as your first cleanse and then use a hot cloth cleanser as your second step.. its up to you!
Use a mask!
I think I have mentioned this before, but I never really understood the importance of masks until about a year ago. It was only after I tried the Origins 10 minute masks that I saw such an improvement on my skin, and therefore it is definitely a way to help stop your breakouts fast. There are so many masks out there and I’m sure theres one that you already love, but my favourites are definitelythis origins mask, and also the Ole Henricksen cold plunge deep pore maskis also one of my current faves. Its bright blue, and is so effective at helping reduce the size and appearance of pores. It quite expensive, but I got a travel size and it has lasted ages because you only need to use it 1-2 times a week.
Ole Henricksen dark spot toner
Its strange to have a product as one of the tips to help stop breakouts fast, but when I say this product works… it works. I started using this product around a year ago after Jamie Genevieve (the QUEEN) recommended it on her video, and I am currently on my third bottle. This is the product that has single handedly cleared up my skin, improved my confidence and because of that, I don’t think I will ever stop buying it. After having a breakout, this toner helps to clear up all of that scaring so that your skin looks so much clearer than what it actually is. And honestly, it is a miracle worker. If you find that your skin texture is uneven and you have dark spots or scarring, please invest in a bottle and watch your life be transformed in about 3 weeks. This is my ultimate favourite skincare product, and I know so many others that have been converted too. There aren’t many skincare products where I can genuinely tell a difference when I don’t use it, but after a day or two of not using this, there is clear negative difference in my skin.
Don’t forget moisturising
I used to be so guilty of this, so I’m saying this so that you learn from my mistakes. I always used to not moisturise my skin because it was ‘oily’ and I was scared the it would break me out. Actually, by not moisturising your skin, you are allowing your skin to produce even more oils to hydrate it naturally, and blocking your pores even more. Plus it helps the skin texture on the other parts of your skin that are not broken out too, therefore helping the appearance of your whole face. I wouldn’t recommend using a heavy moisturiser, but in my Pixi skincare brand insight, I talked about their PH gel moisturiser (gifted) and I still use that now, so thats definitely worth looking into. Although any light moisturiser would be good!
Try and find the long term cause.
I think this more of a long term plan rather than how to stop breakouts fast, but if you can work out what is causing your breakouts, then you are more likely to be able to prevent them going forward. There can be so many causes of breakouts and its quite a long process to pinpoint what exactly is causing your breakouts, but once you know it does really help explain why your skin is reacting this way it does:
- Skincare products reacting (if you are still broken out a week after first using a product, it could be the product).
- Time of year- I always break out more in summer because I tend to sweat more.
My breakouts are mainly caused by hormones, and that is why when I changed my method of contraception, my skin cleared up hugely. Also I have noticed a trend of when I drink more alcohol, my skin tends to break out… I’m not sure whether thats because of the alcohol or the fact that I don’t take my makeup properly when I have been out though.
I feel like this was a really long post, but hopefully it has helped give some tips and tricks on how to help stop your breakouts fast. If you are going through a breakout right now, then hopefully this actually helps. However, my skin still isn’t perfect, so if you have any tips or product recommendations please let me know. I would love to hear! If anyone wants a blog post on how to cover up a breakout just let me know, because I will happily write that next month. I have developed a lot of product recommendations for how to cover angry red spots over the years.
