Lucy from @lu.reviews is one of the lovely York blogging gals from the community that we have built up over the past couple of years, and we started talking properly after seeing Little Miss Sunshine at York theatre. Lucy mainly posts on her Instagram page, and I’m sure you would love her account if you are interested in general beauty, fashion and lifestyle content. There is definitely something for everyone!
What made you start your Instagram page @lu.reviews? Was it planned or a spontaneous decision one day?
I have blogged on and off since University, I studied Fashion Marketing and Retail so it was encouraged, but the pressure of keeping on top of a full blog became too much so I stepped away for a long time. I did miss it and by that point I was using Instagram and thought that maybe I could maintain something smaller and more image based, as especially with reviewing there is sometimes not enough wording to make a significant post. I started on my personal Instagram but realised that some friends and family were probably not interested in the reviews. So Lu.Reviews, which has the same name as the blog I had many moons ago, was reborn, originally reviewing beauty products, but it’s grown to be a bit of a hodgepodge of my life but I’m cool with it. I review all sorts now!
I know that you mainly post on Instagram on @lu.reviews- which is your favourite and least favourite thing about Instagram?
I think I kind of answered this above, I like the fact I can keep posts short and sweet. I like the fact it’s mainly image based and that there’s the opportunity to build a community and interact directly with brands. Sometimes the character count gets in the way if I am trying to post something that is a bit deeper or a longer review, but it doesn’t happen that often. I also don’t like the bots, I just don’t see the point!
Which is your favourite social media platform overall?
I find myself looking at Facebook at lot, but I am not sure why because a lot of it is advertising and just pointless stuff nowadays, I really only want to use it to keep up with family and friends. I like Instagram a lot better for seeing what’s going on in the beauty and fashion world, and to follow local brands and bloggers. I watch a lot of Youtube and tend to follow my faves on Instagram as well.
Who are your favourite creators to follow right now?
I follow some of what you would call the stereotypical larger influencers on Youtube but I am really enjoying getting to know the local blogging scene through Instagram and through local blogging networks such as York Bloggers. I think it’s really important that we all support each other because we’re all out there telling our stories and I think they are worth hearing, so showing each other some love is the way to help people grow.
If you could give someone wanting to start an insta-blog like @lu.reviews one piece of advice- what would it be?
Just do it! There’s no right or wrong way to post, just post what you love and believe in and be genuine and you’ll find your way. Your content will change and develop and that’s ok, that’s what happens in life.
What are your biggest tips for staying on top of things and managing @lu.reviews alongside other commitments?
Don’t beat yourself up about it. Life will get in the way, and it’s ok to step away for a little while if you want or need to. If you force it your content won’t be genuine and you will resent doing it, and that’s not what it’s about. You should be excited about what you’re doing, if it’s not making you happy then it’s not the right thing for you.
We first met each other through blog events and the York bloggers group. I love our York bloggers community- Do you enjoy being a northern blogger? I feel like its starting to boom at the moment!
I love being a northern blogger! I’m from the east coast so Yorkshire fully has my heart and I think we are really building our community, I really hope it continues to grow.
Which is your favourite event that you have been too?
The York Bloggers x The Botanist event I was at last night (23rd Feb), it was just fab and it was great to meet some new faces and catch up with some friends I have met at previous events. Plus some lovely brands had got involved and the goodie bag was insane I have done a IGTV about the event and the lovely brands that featured in the goodie bag.
What are you most excited about for 2020?
To see what’s in store for the Yorkshire/northern blogging scene! I really hope we have more opportunities to work together and build each other up, a great example being this interview 🙂 thank you for having me!
As my blog started as a beauty blog, we will have the last question as something beauty related. What is your holy grail product?
That’s a good question! Because I review a lot I tend to flip flop between products (I have so many minis to go through!) but recently I have really enjoyed the Pixi Glow Tonic (a cult one I know) and I’m just getting into face oils. I do have very oily skin but I’ve found using one once a week has really left my skin feeling great the next day and not ‘greasy’ looking at all. I’m also a sucker for a mask, be it face, hand, foot… I even tried a nail mask recently! I reviewed a character mask which went down great because it looked terrifying (I absolutely did not look like the Little Mermaid…) so I’ve started collecting those to review, so if you want a good laugh stay tuned for those! I am doing my best to move all of my products over to cruelty free and sustainable options so maybe then I will find some products I’ll actually stick with long term. That’s a rambly answer for a very specific question!
So that is the post! I hope you love Lucy from @lu.reviews as much as I do and if you want to go check out her work further then make sure to check out her Instagram page.
